{"id":21958,"date":"2026-04-02T17:06:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T17:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oktopayments.com\/latam\/?p=21958"},"modified":"2026-04-06T17:20:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T17:20:25","slug":"new-report-affirms-95-of-latam-consumers-abandon-payments-despite-96-merchant-satisfaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oktopayments.com\/latam\/new-report-affirms-95-of-latam-consumers-abandon-payments-despite-96-merchant-satisfaction\/","title":{"rendered":"New Report affirms: 95% of LatAm Consumers Abandon Payments Despite 96% Merchant Satisfaction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>OKTO PAYMENTS\u2019 report identifies a widening \u2018Payment Experience Gap\u2019 that could threaten regional growth in the\u00a0igaming, online trading, and e-commerce industries in Latin America.<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sao Paulo, date<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;\u2013 96%<\/strong>&nbsp;of merchants are satisfied with their payment providers, yet&nbsp;<strong>95%<\/strong>&nbsp;of Latin American consumers have abandoned payments in the past year because they were too slow or complex.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This contradiction lies at the heart of a new report by OKTO PAYMENTS, revealing a widening disconnect between the accelerated demands of consumer behaviour and merchant perception across Latin America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur study highlights a structural paradox in the market and shows how consumers are now leading the market through a shift in both behaviour and expectations,\u201d explains Edward Chandler, Global CEO at OKTO PAYMENTS. \u201cMerchants feel confident in their payment performance while consumers are increasingly intolerant of friction. When those perceptions diverge, revenue leakage follows as well as customer churn.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to this new report,&nbsp;<strong>40%&nbsp;<\/strong>of&nbsp;LatAm&nbsp;merchants identify customer acquisition or churn as their primary barrier to growth. At the same time,&nbsp;<strong>62%<\/strong>&nbsp;admitted that payment friction directly contributes to churn and lost revenue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the scale of the problem and the high stakes of the payment experience for a new generation of consumers&nbsp;have&nbsp;been revealed to be far greater than merchants thought.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While&nbsp;<strong>84%<\/strong>&nbsp;of merchants estimated that between<strong>&nbsp;1-12%<\/strong>&nbsp;of new users abandon their platform due to payment friction, the study found that&nbsp;<strong>39%<\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;LatAm&nbsp;consumers will abandon a payment completely if they face difficulties. In fact, almost half of consumers (<strong>45%<\/strong>) admit they have abandoned up to<strong>&nbsp;20%<\/strong>&nbsp;of their deposits due to complexity or lack of speed in the past year alone. In&nbsp;addition,&nbsp;88% will abandon a purchase if funds are not deposited within one minute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;<strong>92.5%<\/strong>&nbsp;of merchants believe customers are willing to wait more than four hours for a payout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings show what the report defines as the \u2018Payment Experience Gap\u2019 \u2013 a growing misalignment between evolving consumer expectations and merchant assumptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is more than a technical mismatch \u2014 it\u2019s a strategic blind spot,\u201d Chandler adds. \u201cBut if a business understands how expectations have changed, and aligns payment speed with consumer behaviour, they can turn a point of friction into a driver of loyalty. Our report uncovered a behavioural shift that many businesses have yet to fully absorb. Consumers today are loyal to seamless experiences, not to platforms.
